That's what what people were breathing in when they used this stuff. The cans of denatured alcohol at Home Depot said methanol (or. "Safe" strippers, which there are no completed studies for, so we don't "know" they're dangerous, but that won't stop them from making your fingernails grow the opposite direction or whatever.Ĭitristip wasn't always awful, but it was always marketed as "safe." It became the awfulness that it now is when it was reformulated to remove the NMP from it. The cans of denatured alcohol at Home Depot said methanol (or methylated spirits, whatever). I'm not a chemist, so take it with a grain of salt I guess, but as far as I'm concerned they fall into two groups:ĭangerous strippers, which contain hazardous chemicals based on scientific studies Some is worse than others, but I absolutely wouldn't use any strippers, not Citristip or any other "safe" stripper, in an indoor space that isn't well ventilated. Self posts need at least a few descriptive words or they will be removed The denatured alcohol also helps dissolve stains such as glue, wax, paint, grease, red wine, and ink stains, producing excellent results if the methylated spirit is not colored. Much to the chagrin of my backpacking Guru, Colin Fletcher, I've become a convert to the Meths-using legions out there!!! 8) But, as there is quite a bit of difference between the types of Meths available all over the world, I now easily see why some folks love using it, and others hate it!!! It's too bad everyone can't have the same, clean-burning, easy-lighting, non-sooting Meths that we have in the US./r/finishing is a forum that encourages the respectful exchange of wood or metal finishing knowledge and projects. There are also other chemicals used, but that is by far the most common. Both stoves work very well with what's available in the States, and that's more than enough reason to keep using it in those stoves, and and in all my other Meths stove, too. Methylated spirits is denatured using things like denatonium (and of course methanol), one of the most bitter substances known to humans. The stuff is purely wonderful, as far as I'm concerned! That's one reason why I keep one 111T, and one 199 setup and ready to burn Meths. Since that time, NO Meths that I've purchased, here in the US, has sooted a pot, nor pan!!! So, our Meths is certainly different than what is being used by our British and Scandanavian Brothers. Once I cleaned them out, and made them all of a consistent size, that stove turned into a real screamer!! I wrote it off to a poorly designed stove, and didn't find out until I became a resident here at CCSU, that my burner had clogged holes. Then came my Optimus 77A, which didn't work that well, but it did not soot the pots, either. Imagine my surprise when both fuels worked very well in this stove! And, to further deepen the mystery and wonder, using Meths was easy, worked well, and didn't soot the pots, at all!!! Amazing, I tell you, simply amazing!!! Later, I tried Meths in my 199, and it worked just as well in that stove, too, after a little experimentation. Well, I loved that stove so much, that I decided to try it with kerosene and Meths, in addition to the Coleman fuel I'd already been using. AND, it was nice a quiet, too, which was a change from my only other multifuel stove at the time, my first MSR X-GK. I fell deeply in love with this stove, as it worked like a champ, started easily, and cooked food like my home gas range. In any case, the slowness of cooking with whatever Meths that was, and the mess it made, cause me to jump on the "Meths is sooty and worthless" bandwagon, and I stayed firmly on it for quite a few years.įast forward many years to when I got my very first Optimus 111T. ![]() Back when I first tried Meths, I had already been "conditioned" to expect lots of soot, and of course, that's exactly what I got! I have NO idea what kind of Meths I actually used, back then, but whatever it was, it created a sooty mess, which I, personally, do not like at all! No matter how careful you are, you are going to get some of that stuff on your gear, and dirty gear does not last as long as clean gear, in my experience. This subject always brings to mind how things can change, with experience, and with time.
